ADNOC signs deal for ammonia-cracking plants

The German chemical engineering company Thyssenkrupp Uhde and the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) have agreed to collaborate on the development of large-scale ammonia cracking plants.

The agreement with the Thyssenkrupp Group subsidiary is a component of a plan to develop new markets for hydrogen and advance global value chains for clean energy. Petrochemical, fertiliser, coking, and polymere plant development is done by Thyssenkrupp Uhde.

The two businesses will collaborate to create industrial-scale ammonia cracking facilities under the terms of the agreement. Additionally, it will open up potential for the supply and transportation of low-carbon or green ammonia from the UAE to significant plants throughout the world.

Hydrogen is transported by ammonia, which is significantly simpler to compress and move. Ammonia must be broken down or converted into hydrogen after being transported and before being used in the energy value chain.

“Countries in Europe, along with many others, are looking to clean hydrogen imports to decarbonize industry and society. Clean ammonia is the best way to transport hydrogen by ship, and together with ADNOC, we will deliver the last piece of the puzzle for global clean hydrogen trade at large scale,” said Cord Landsmann, CEO of Thyssenkrupp Uhde.

ADNOC stated in May 2021 that the TA’ZIZ industrial ecosystem and chemicals centre would house a low-carbon ammonia production facility. In order to verify its use, it has sent demonstration cargoes of low-carbon ammonia to customers in Germany and Asia. It has also greatly increased its energy collaborations across the world.
